WNBA Upgrades Foul on Chicago Sky's Chennedy Carter in Clash Against Indiana Fever
NEW YORK — Following a thorough review, the WNBA elevated the foul committed by Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter against Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark to a flagrant-1 violation. The incident occurred during Saturday's matchup, where the Fever clinched a narrow 71-70 victory.
Carter's action, a shoulder hit that sent Clark to the floor just before an inbound pass in the third quarter, was initially classified as an away-from-the-ball foul and deemed common. However, upon review, the league determined it warranted a more severe penalty.
Clark, reflecting on the physicality of the game, remarked, "I wasn’t expecting it. It is what it is. It’s a physical game. Go make the free throw and execute on offense, and I feel like that’s kind of what we did."
Additionally, the league imposed a $1,000 fine on Sky forward Angel Reese for her failure to comply with post-game media obligations. Moreover, the Chicago Sky organization was fined $5,000 for their oversight in ensuring all players adhere to league media policies.
Although the league did not impose further penalties on Carter, it's notable that the league reserves the right to reclassify fouls and apply fines or suspensions accordingly.
In her postgame interview, Indiana coach Christie Sides commended Clark for her composure in the face of physical challenges throughout the season. Sides expressed hope that continued scrutiny of such plays would lead to better officiating and player protection.
Clark contributed significantly to the game with 11 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while Reese added eight points and 13 rebounds to the Sky's efforts.
