East Baton Rouge Parish Residents Eligible for 20 Percent Flood Insurance Discount
BATON ROUGE, La. – East Baton Rouge Parish residents and business owners will soon benefit from a 20 percent discount on flood insurance premiums, officials announced.
In a recent press release, the Office of Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome confirmed the upcoming discount.
Mayor-President Broome proudly announced that East Baton Rouge Parish has achieved a Class 6 rating in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS). This rating, determined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), highlights the parish’s effective floodplain management and dedication to mitigating flood risks.
Starting October 1, 2024, homeowners and business owners with NFIP policies in East Baton Rouge Parish will receive a 20 percent discount on flood insurance premiums. This increase from the previous 15 percent discount, is directly attributed to proactive flood mitigation strategies under Mayor Broome's leadership.
“We remain committed to leading our community towards greater disaster resilience. Our hard work means an additional 5 percent discount for EBR property owners, saving them an extra $700,000 annually. This achievement demonstrates our dedication to reducing flood risks in Baton Rouge while easing the financial burden of flood insurance on our residents,” said Mayor Broome.
Mayor Broome’s administration continues prioritizing extensive drainage work in East Baton Rouge Parish. Over the past year, 35,000 tons of debris have been removed from the Comite River, Claycut Bayou, Ward Creek, Jones Creek, Bayou Fountain, Elbow Creek, and Dawson Creek.

This rating, determined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), recognizes the parish's dedicated floodplain management activities and commitment to reducing flood risks.
Starting October 1, 2024, this new rating will allow for a 20 percent discount, previously a 15 percent discount under the previous rating, on flood insurance premiums that homeowners and business owners pay for NFIP policies issued or renewed within East Baton Rouge Parish. This discount directly results from the proactive flood mitigation strategies implemented under Mayor Broome to protect our community and reduce property damage.
