BATON ROUGE, La. — Former mayoral candidate and State Representative Ted James has thrown his support behind Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, declaring her the best candidate to lead Baton Rouge into the future ahead of the Dec. 7 runoff election.

In a statement released Thursday, Nov. 21, James emphasized Broome’s leadership, vision, and grasp of key issues as reasons for his endorsement.

“After eight months of forums, debates, and conversations with the people of Baton Rouge, one thing is clear: Sharon Weston Broome is the leader we need to move our city forward,” said James. “She is the clear choice to serve as Mayor-President.”

James, who placed third in the Nov. 5 primary election, addressed his supporters directly, urging them to unite behind Broome.

“To the over 50,000 voters who trusted me in the primary, I’m asking you to trust me again. Trust the vision I laid out during my campaign and vote for Sharon Weston Broome. She embodies the hopes and dreams we share for Baton Rouge,” he said.

Broome, seeking her third and final term, faces first-time candidate Sid Edwards, a retired high school football coach and Republican. Despite a contentious election season, James’ endorsement has added momentum to Broome’s campaign, which has centered on equity, opportunity, and a commitment to progress.

Mayor-President Broome expressed gratitude for James’ support, calling it a reflection of shared priorities.

“I am deeply honored to have the support of a leader like Ted James,” said Broome. “He has consistently demonstrated his love for Baton Rouge and has elevated important conversations about equity and opportunity throughout this campaign.”

She added, “Ted’s thought leadership strengthens our community, and I look forward to working with him to continue building a better Baton Rouge.”

With the runoff election just weeks away, both campaigns are ramping up efforts to connect with voters. Election Day is set for Saturday, Dec. 7.
