Southern University Engineering Program Boosted by $10,000 Donation
BATON ROUGE – Southern University’s College of Science and Engineering has received a significant financial boost with a $10,000 donation to advance its innovative mentorship program for engineering students. The Southern Engineering Alumni Scholars (SEAS) initiative, now in its second year, is focused on developing the next generation of engineers and scientists, with a strong emphasis on mentorship from Jaguar alumni.
This contribution, made by Collis Temple Jr., a member of the LSU Board of Supervisors, marks a notable investment in the university’s efforts to recruit top-tier talent while supporting current students' academic journey. Temple, though not a Southern University alumnus, has deep familial ties to the institution, underscoring Southern's far-reaching impact and influence on the community and beyond.
The SEAS program, which aims to cultivate problem-solvers and innovators, is seen as a key driver in producing the kind of graduates who will contribute to societal and technological advancements. As the program grows, the infusion of funding will further enhance its mission of nurturing talented students and empowering them to excel in a rapidly evolving world.
Southern University’s Dean of the College of Science and Engineering, Lealon Martin, expressed optimism that this donation will inspire further alumni support and engagement, noting that the success of the college’s mission is closely tied to the involvement of its graduates and external partners. "This kind of support is critical to our ability to train future leaders in engineering," he emphasized.
While specific plans for the donation are still being developed, the funds are expected to be allocated towards student housing, tuition assistance, and program enhancements. These improvements will bolster the educational experience both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring students have the resources they need to thrive academically and professionally.
The SEAS program represents a broader vision for Southern University: to be a hub for developing engineers who not only excel in their fields but also contribute to the betterment of society. As alumni, community leaders, and external stakeholders continue to rally behind the program, Southern is poised to remain a powerful force in shaping Louisiana’s future workforce.
With donations like this, Southern University is not just investing in students—it’s investing in the future of innovation and progress.
