Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome Commits to Serving All Residents Amid St. George Incorporation
Baton Rouge, La. — Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome affirmed her dedication to serving all residents of East Baton Rouge Parish during a press conference held at City Hall. Her remarks followed the Louisiana Supreme Court's ruling in favor of the incorporation of the proposed City of St. George.
"As Mayor-President, my commitment extends to every citizen of East Baton Rouge Parish," Broome stated. "The recent court decision approving the incorporation of St. George marks a pivotal moment for our community. It necessitates seasoned leadership to advocate for the collective interests of our entire community, grounded in a thorough understanding of city finances, operations, and future prospects."
Broome highlighted that nearly half of St. George's residents who voted in the 2019 referendum opposed the incorporation. "My administration is poised to vigorously represent their interests and ensure their voices are heard during this transition," she asserted.
Concerns regarding the transparency and fairness of St. George's municipal service plans were also addressed. Broome pointed out the lack of clarity in the proposed service plan, which was presented in a binder at a recent press conference but not disclosed in detail. "This is a matter of governance and fairness to every taxpayer in East Baton Rouge Parish," she emphasized.
Looking ahead, Broome emphasized her readiness to engage in firm financial negotiations to safeguard taxpayer interests. "This is about more than budgets; it's about maintaining the quality of life for all our residents and ensuring that inclusivity and progress guide our unified path forward," she said.
Broome framed the incorporation of St. George as a call to action, underscoring her commitment to navigating the complexities of this new chapter. "As your Mayor-President, I am here to steer us through these changes.
