LaMont Cole and Adam Smith, the newly appointed leaders of East Baton Rouge Parish schools, have set ambitious goals for the district's future. At a press conference held on Thursday, Cole, the new superintendent, and Smith, the deputy superintendent, outlined their vision for transforming the state's second-largest school district, which serves over 40,000 students.

The School Board’s decision to appoint Cole and Smith ended a prolonged period of contention and uncertainty regarding the district's leadership. Cole, with extensive experience as an educator and Metro Council member, is stepping into the role of superintendent. Smith, a long-time district veteran, and recent interim superintendent, will serve as deputy superintendent, having endorsed Cole’s appointment.

Cole stressed the significance of his new role, declaring, "This is the most important work of my lifetime." He emphasized the importance of starting the upcoming school year, which begins on August 8, smoothly and effectively. "Ensuring a strong start for all students and staff is our top priority," Cole affirmed.
Smith addressed critical logistical issues, focusing on the need for improved student transportation—a challenge the district faced last year. He urged parents to register their children promptly, noting, "It's essential for all children to be registered for that first day of school." Smith highlighted the district's high mobility rate and its impact on enrollment.

The new leadership team has received considerable community support. Teacher unions, which had initially planned a sickout if Smith was not named superintendent, have canceled their plans following Smith’s endorsement of Cole. This move reflects a unified approach toward the new administration.

The School Board’s decision to hire Smith directly under a 1968 law ensures stability within the district. This unique arrangement protects Smith’s position and leverages his experience alongside Cole’s leadership.

Cole and Smith’s long-standing collaboration was a central theme in their remarks. Cole recalled their past work, stating, "We've always worked together to build a better community." Their shared commitment to educational excellence is expected to drive significant improvements for the district.

With strong community backing and a clear plan for progress, Cole and Smith are well-positioned to lead East Baton Rouge Parish schools into a transformative new era.
