Deadline Approaches for Claiming State Tax Refunds Before They Become Unclaimed Property

BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana taxpayers have a crucial deadline fast approaching: September 6 is the last day to claim state tax refunds before they are designated as unclaimed property.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) has sent out notices to 18,801 taxpayers—both individuals and businesses—alerting them that their refunds, totaling $9,344,916, will be transferred to the Unclaimed Property Division of the state treasurer’s office if not claimed by the deadline.

The LDR has advised recipients of these notices to act promptly to ensure they receive their refunds. Taxpayers can claim their refunds using one of two methods:

  1. Online Submission: Taxpayers can file their claims electronically through the Louisiana Department of Revenue’s official website. This method allows for immediate processing and is recommended for its convenience.
  2. Mail Submission: Taxpayers can use the paper voucher included in their notice to submit their claim by mail. The completed voucher should be sent to the address provided in the notice to ensure timely processing.

The LDR will issue refunds in the form of paper checks to those who meet the September 6 deadline. Refunds not claimed by this date will become part of the unclaimed property pool and can be retrieved from the Unclaimed Property Division of the state treasurer’s office at a later time.
