CATS Breaks Ground on Transformative North Transit Center in North Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. – A new era of public transportation began as the Capital Area Transit System (CATS) broke ground on the eagerly awaited North Transit Center. The ceremony, held at 5275 Airline Highway, marked a significant step forward for North Baton Rouge, promising to revolutionize the area's transit landscape.

Amid a buzz of excitement, community members and local leaders gathered to celebrate this milestone. "The North Transit Center is a testament to our commitment to modernizing and enhancing public transit in Baton Rouge," declared Theo Richards, CEO of CATS. "This facility will be a game-changer for our transportation network and a beacon of progress for North Baton Rouge."

Mayor-President Sharon Weston-Broome and Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Secretary Terrence Donohue also took the stage, emphasizing the project's importance. "This is more than just a transit center; it's a cornerstone for connectivity and economic growth in North Baton Rouge," said Weston-Broome. Donohue added, "The North Transit Center is a critical piece of our plan to improve mobility and access throughout the city."

The new transit hub will be a focal point for multiple bus routes, equipped with state-of-the-art amenities and real-time bus tracking capabilities. This includes the MyStop app, recently launched by CATS, which allows residents to track buses in real-time, reducing wait times and making commutes more predictable.

"This facility will transform how people move around Baton Rouge," Richards noted. "It’s about more than convenience—it's about connecting communities and creating opportunities."

Part of the ambitious Plank-Nicholson Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, the North Transit Center will bridge the gap between North and South Baton Rouge, offering faster, more reliable, and more efficient transportation options. "This BRT service will not only reduce congestion and decrease travel times but also provide a sustainable alternative to single-occupancy vehicle travel," Richards explained.

Anticipation is high, with the project expected to be completed by 2025. The Communications Director of CATS emphasized the transformative impact this center will have on the community. "This isn't just about transit—it's about enhancing the quality of life, supporting economic development, and building a brighter future for North Baton Rouge."

Residents of North Baton Rouge can look forward to a more connected, vibrant community as this project unfolds. For the latest updates on the North Transit Center and the MyStop app, visit the CATS website or follow their social media channels.
