BAKER, La. — Baker High School is set to celebrate its grand reopening, marking a significant milestone for the cherished institution that suffered extensive damage during the 2016 Baton Rouge flood. The new, state-of-the-art building, constructed after the demolition of the old structure began in September 2022, will open its doors under the inspiring theme "Building Baker Forward Brick by Brick."

Baker Mayor Darnell Waites expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event and the "Baker Forward" initiative. "The grand reopening of Baker High School is a landmark occasion for our community," said Mayor Waites. "The 'Baker Forward' theme reflects our collective resilience and determination to progress while paying tribute to our heritage. We warmly invite all alumni to contribute their memories and join us in celebrating this new era for our school."

Alumni are encouraged to submit their photographs to Mr. Ricky Jones at the Central Office. Photos can also be sent electronically via email to pr@bakerschools.org. The collected images will play a crucial role in the celebration, serving as a testament to the lasting bonds formed at Baker High School. These images will be showcased in a special festive presentation, highlighting the school's rich history and enduring spirit.

Baker School Board member Mrs. Linda B. Perkins joyously expressed, “Thank the Lord this time has come. I’m elated to be a part of this process of the kids coming back after all these years.” Mrs. Perkins has been in the city of Baker for over 40 years. Mrs. Joyce Burges, President of the school board and a resident of Baker for nearly 35 years, was filled with cheer as she spoke of the reopening process. “To God be the glory. There were many people that aided in getting us to this point, but the children are ultimately the ones who will reap all the benefits.”

The grand reopening will be a two-part event. On Friday, August 16th, at 6:00 pm, there will be a pep rally and parade of Baker Schools. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony will follow on Saturday, August 17th. The event will feature a formal ceremony unveiling the new facilities, including cutting-edge classrooms, advanced technology labs, and modern athletic amenities. This celebration will underscore the Baker community's resilience and forward-looking vision, celebrating both the past achievements and future aspirations of Baker High School.
